Dalisa Pigram tipped to win Helpmann Award

Dalisa Pigram is a finalist in this year’s Helpmann Awards, for excellence in Australian performing arts.

She is tipped to win the Best Female Dancer category.

Winners are to be announced at a ceremony in Sydney tonight.

Warmun: Flood rescuers’ bravery recognised

This years Australian Bravery Awards recognised nine people for their part in the 2011 flood rescues.

Christopher Churchill and Senior Constable Donald Couper received Commendations for Brave Conduct.

A group bravery citation went to Kathleen and Rodney Burnby, the late Christopher Clare, Tanya Couper, Cecil Mosquito, Julie Echo and Leon Pinday.

Wyndham: Ngnowar Aerwah is governance award finalist

Alcohol rehab group Ngnowar Aerwah Aboriginal Corporation is a finalist in Reconciliation Australia’s 2014 Indigenous Governance Awards.

Prof Mick Dodson was chairman of the selection panel.

Turia portrait in art prize finals

A portrait of bushfire survivor Turia Pitt is a finalist in the prestigious Black Swan portraiture prize.

A bushfire trapped her and other competitors in the 2011 Racing the Planet marathon at El Questro.

Ms Pitt, who was then an engineer at Argyle,  had burns to much of her face and body.

She has continued to compete in various events as part of her rehabilitation.

Broome: Student wins training prize

St Mary’s College student Lillian Banks was one of 500 students to win a Australian Vocational Student Prize (AVSP).

Local member Melissa Price says the award recognises the skill, commitment and achievements of school students who take on vocational education in their final year.
