Cockatoo Island to Hedland: Cyclone advice

Communities from Cockatoo Island to Port Hedland are advised to prepare for a possible cyclone.

DFESThe tropical low that has been causing record flooding is expected to move over open water and possibly form a cyclone by Monday or Tuesday.

Parts of Cape Leveque Road have been impassable after more than a week of rains.

The ABC says the mail vehicle has been unable to make deliveries for 12 days, and community supplies are running low.

Dampier Peninsula community residents are invited to come forth with complaints and queries about things they have bought.

Senior Regional Officer for Consumer Protection Annetta Bellingeri

Senior Regional Officer for the Kimberley Annetta Bellingeri plans to visit Beagle Bay, Lombadina, Djarindjin and One Arm Point between 22nd and 26thApril 2013.

She says she will concentrate on raising awareness of scams that target Aboriginal consumers as well providing information and advice about consumer and tenancy law.

“Request for money scams target all Western Australians however there are some versions which are particularly aimed at Aboriginal consumers and I hope that raising awareness through education can prevent people becoming victims,” she said.

Kununurra, One Arm Point, Broome: Waste grants

The state government has awarded grants to three Kimberley waste management projects.

They are:

  • Ardyaloon Inc. – $20,000 for a project to replace the use of plastic shopping bags in a remote Kimberley community
  • Nirumbuk Aboriginal Corporation – $20,000 for baling equipment to recycle drink containers from a community near Broome
  • Waringarri Aboriginal Corporation – $9,795 for equipment to crush waste glass in Kununurra for use in community art projects.
