Fitzroy Valley: New native title claim

A new Native Title claim has been registered under the Native Title Act.
While it is likely to take some years to resolve, the new Yi-Martuwarra Ngurrara claim will oblige mining companies and explorers to consult with the Aboriginal claimants before doing any ground-disturbing work in the areas claimed.
Walmajarri woman Annette Kogolo said it is the second claim called “Ngurrara”.
“The other was desert,” Ms Kogolo said.
“All this is in pastoral leases, like Christmas Creek and Cherabin.”
She is listed in Native Title Tribunal documents as a key person in the group that made the first claim, which received a Native Title Determination in 2007.
The new claim area extends from south and west of Fitzroy Crossing, in an east-south easterly direction, down as far as the Canning Stock Route.
The Kimberley Land Council says the new claim straddles four shire boundaries.
“The application falls within the Local Government Authorities of the Shire of Broome, the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley, the Shire of East Pilbara and the
Shire of Halls Creek,” says to the KLC website.

Opinion: Barry Haase on the mining tax

Barry Haase MHR

Barry Haase MHR

Local member Barry Haase predicts a high court challenge against the new mining tax.

“This mining tax is a federal tax on state property and it is a tax which discriminates between states”, Mr Haase said.

“Both of those things are of course prohibited by our Constitution and therefore a constitutional challenge before the High Court is not only desirable but unavoidable.”
