Cattlemen sue Commonwealth over live exports ban
Northern cattle industry members have launched a class action against the government for suspending live exports to Indonesia.
They filed the case in the Federal Court on Monday.
In 2011 the Gillard government’s agriculture minister Joe Ludwig abruptly banned live cattle exports due to animal cruelty concerns.

Rinehart buying stations
Gina Rinhart’s company Hancock Prospecting is buying half shares in Liveringa and Nerrima stations.
The deal is part of a joint venture with the Laitt family, which owns the Milne AgriGroup.
They have formed a company, Liveringa Station Beef, which has also bought the old Clover Meats abattoir at Waroona south of Perth.

‘Criminal’ contractor worries pastoralist
Pastoralist Jack Burton says he is concerned about reports of a company he contracted.
TLF, which supplied labour to Mr Burton’s Gin Gin abattoir in WA’s south, is under investigation for alleged organised crime.
Mr Burton said he is also seeking advice about the quality of steel the company supplied for his new abattoir at Kilto.

Regular Singapore-Broome-Wyndham shipping service
An Australian company has started a regular shipping service between Singapore, Wyndham and Broome.
The Kimberline is carrying agricultural machinery and mining consumables, but the owners hope to attract cargoes of agricultural exports, such as boxed beef.

Kilto: Meat orders coming in for new abattoir
Pastoralist Jack Burton says he already has overseas orders for his new abattoir’s product.
While the new meatworks at Kilto Station is still being built, Mr Burton says he is finalising more orders that will see the first three years’ meat pre-sold.

Premier expects live China exports
Premier Colin Barnett says he expects WA to start exporting live beef cattle to China this year.
He has been negotiating a trial shipment of 1,000 head to Zhejiang province, and said the market could eventually be larger than Indonesia.
