Lake Argyle: French tourists start bushfire

Two French tourists accidentally started a 200ha bushfire as they returned from fishing at Lake Argyle last weekend.

It started when they used a burning stick as a torch to find their way back to Hidden Valley Caravan Park in the dark.

Lake Argyle: Freshwater croc numbers down

An environmental groups says freshwater crocodile numbers appear to have declined dramatically.

Kimberley Toad busters found just five live crocs and two dead ones in survey at Lake Argyle over the weekend.

Cane toad poisoning is suspected to be the cause.

Kununurra: Reward offered for missing life jacket

Peter Campbell is offering a reward for the return of his lost life jacket.

He said he lost a neoprene type ski jacket between between Argyle dam and Kunnunurra on Thursday 12 July.

“It was a gift so would I love to get it back,” he said.

Lake Argyle: Young freshies go for food and shelter

A new study found very young freshwater crocs choose habitats with plenty of food and shelter.

The were eight times more likely to live in a grassy bank or a mat of floating vegetation than an open bank.

Waterbird numbers bounce back

Waterbird populations across northern and central Australia have bred back up to the numbers of 30 years ago.

Scientists say big wet seasons have replenished the wetlands, with large numbers of birds recorded at Lake Argyle, Lake Gregory, Roebuck Bay and the Eighty Mile Beach.

Bird numbers are yet to recover in the Murray-Darling Basin.

Kununurra identity Marion O’Kenny is in hospital after a jet-ski accident on Lake Argyle.

She has been in hospital with facial injuries after the New Year’s Day accident.

Ord River levels to fluctuate

Water CorporationsThe Water Corporation says levels are likely to fluctuate in Lake Argyle, Lake Kununurra and the Lower Ord.

Lake Kununurra will also be deliberately lowered for two weeks during the coming wet season for maintenance.

Lake Argyle: Cane Toads living in termite mounds

Cane toads have been found completely embedded in a termite mound near Lake Argyle.

They were completly sealed into the mound by termites, which they were also eating.
