Gillard wants more people in Kununurra and Karratha

Prime Minister Julia Gillard says she intends to encourage more people to settle where the jobs are.
She said a re-elected Labor government would encourage skilled workers to settle in Kununurra and Karratha rather than big projects relying on “fly-in, fly-out”.

Broome North: Builders wanted for display village
Lands minister Brendon Grylls wants to hear from builders keen to be part of Australia’s largest display village.
Landcorp has planned a 10-house display village at the entrance to Broome North subdivision, which will eventually double the size of Broome.

Government housing: Tenants cause $144,000 damage weekly
Homeswest and other public housing tenants are causing almost $144,000 worth of damage to their homes every week.
The government has evicted fewer tenants for damage last year than they did the year before, despite the damage bill going up 16%.

Broome: Shire fails to evict itinerate campers
Only seven itinerate campers have accepted the offer of free tickets home, according to this report.
The rest, who have had medication and bedding thrown away by Shire Rangers breaking up their campsites, have found other less suitable places to stay in Broome.
Comment sought for pre-paid power metres
The government plans to make pre-paid electricity metres to more Kimberley users, and would like your opinion.
The meters are already used by in homes in several remote Aboriginal communities.

Kununurra’s industrial area is to be shifted from the centre of town.
The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley has approved a 15-year plan.
Halls Creek: New water supply makes more housing possible

Water minister Graham Jacobs today announced new water bores had been found for Halls Creek.
The government refused to approve new housing developments in the town last year because of water shortages, but Mr Jacobs said 300 new “services” would now be possible.
Former water minister and Halls Creek Shire President Ernie Bridge welcomed the news.
“For too long such communities have suffered at the hands of water supplies which has impacted on the growth of the community … and substantial development was unlikely to take place,” he said.

Halls Creek: Queensland builder meets targets
Queensland contractro Ri-con says it has met targets for the first stage of its indigenous housing contract.
The company has renovated 37 houses in 16 weeks, and taken on Aboriginal trainees.

Paspaley says air fares, housing shortage stifle business
A key player in the Kimberley’s resort industry says high air fares and tight accommodation are stifling growth.
Marilynne Paspaley, who owns four Kimberley hotels, said air fares from Australian cities to the Kimberley are much higher than to other holiday destinations, and the accommodation shortage makes it hard to find and keep staff.
