FESA ‘not told’ of Racing the Planet
FESA said yesterday it had not been told Racing the Planet was to be staged at El Questro.
In a Kununurra hearing of an inquiry into the bushfire disaster that badly burned several runners, Police and the shire said they had also had serious concerns before the race began.

Racing the Planet: Government sponsor ‘unaware’ of runner’s death
Tourism WA sponsored Racing the Planet, unaware a runner had died at one of the group’s overseas events.
A parliamentary inquiry was also told the government body had only received the group’s risk assessment plan until the day before the race, in which two women were badly burned in a bushfire.

The Racing the Planet bushfire inquiry’s chairman says it seems the runners competing were not properly briefed.
Mike Nahan said the competitors did not know what to do to when confronted by a bushfire.
Racing the Planet ’should have been cancelled’
FESA says the Racing the Planet event should have been cancelled, or taken a safer route.
The authority told an inquiry into the marathon that almost killed two women in September it was not told of the event before it started started.
The women runners suffered burns to 80% of their bodies after being trapped by a bushfire at El Questro.

El Questro: Kimberley untramarathon ‘disorganised’
El Questro staff say the 2010 Kimberley untramarathon was “disorganised” and they were happy when it was over.
They told police they had been expected to look after contestants’ bags, organise their medical attention, and even their drinking water because “Racing the Planet” organisers did not have enough staff.
The State Government then agreed to sponsor the event in 2011, in which two female runners were trapped in a bushfire and almost died.

Marathon bushfire: Government agrees to inquiry
The government has finally agreed to a Parliamentary Inquiry into last year’s Kimberley ultramarathon bushfire.
The inquiry will examine whether organisers Racing the Planet took reasonable steps to identify and reduce risks and maintain safety in the event that saw two women runners almost burned to death.
