Turia Pitt to testify at marathon fire inquiry

Runner Turia Pitt will testify this week at an inquiry into last year’s Racing the Planet marathon .

She was  trapped with other runners in a bushfire that burned 64 percent of her body at El Questro last year.

Racing the Planet: Government sponsor ‘unaware’ of runner’s death

Tourism WA sponsored Racing the Planet, unaware a runner had died at one of the group’s overseas events.

A parliamentary inquiry was also told the government body had only received the group’s risk assessment plan until the day before the race, in which two women were badly burned in a bushfire.

Racing the Planet runners ‘not briefed’

The Racing the Planet bushfire inquiry’s chairman says it seems the runners competing were not properly briefed.

Mike Nahan said the competitors did not know what to do to when confronted by a bushfire.

Racing the Planet ‘should have been cancelled’

FESA says the Racing the Planet event should have been cancelled, or taken a safer route.

The authority told an inquiry into the marathon that almost killed two women in September it was not told of the event before it started started.

The women runners suffered burns to 80% of their bodies after being trapped by a bushfire at El Questro.

El Questro: Dead man’s body removed

The body of a man who died in a gorge last weekend has been taken to Kununurra.

He was Queenslander Luke Field, 28, who had been hiking at the gorge when he fell.

A young man died of head injuries today after falling into a gorge.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service had already sent a plane when the 27-year-old tourist died.

Marathon bushfire: Government agrees to inquiry

The state government has agreed to a judicial inquiry into the Kimberley ultramarathon at El Questro last year.

In the event, known as “Racing the Planet”, two women were left badly scarred when trapped by a bushfire.
