SAS in tanker hijack exercises

The SAS has been practicing assaults on oil tankers off Australia’s north west coast for two weeks.

A spokesman said the operation was designed to improve defence capability against terrorists, criminal gangs or enemy states that may hijack an oil or gas vessel.

It was one of nine north west defence force exercises planned for this year.

Wyndham baby serving in Afghanistan

A boy born in Wyndham is now a soldier in Afghanistan.

Trooper Peter Batten is attached to the Second Cavalry Regiment serving in Tarin Kot province.

His father Charles Batten said the family moved to Wyndham from Halls Creek just before Peter was born, and he spent his first six years in port town.

Push to pave the Tanami

Halls Creek shire hosted a meeting of people keen to upgrade the Tanami Road last Friday.

Nationals candidate Michele Pucci and Liberals candidate Jenny Bloom were in attendance.

The group’s spokesperson Lara Wilde said Labor candidate Josey Farrer and Greens candidate were invited but did not attend.
