Halls Creek benefits from less takeaway alcohol

64 per cent drop in alcohol-related ED presentations in second year of Halls Creek liquor restrictions

Police tasking dropped by 50 per cent

Drunk driving, drunken assaults, police call-outs, alcohol-related hospitalisations and demand for the local sobering up centre have all significantly decreased since liquor restrictions were introduced in Halls Creek more than two years ago.

Since May 2009, Halls Creek Hospital Emergency Department presentations dropped from 942 to 339; assault offences dropped by 58 per cent; and general police tasking halved over the 24 months post-restriction, according to The Impact of Liquor Restrictions in Halls Creek compiled by the Drug and Alcohol Office (DAO).

Mental Health Minister Helen Morton said reducing the level of alcohol-related harm being experienced by the people of Halls Creek was exactly what everyone wanted to achieve and this community was benefiting from these positive changes.

“This is another example of how alcohol management initiatives, including liquor restrictions, can give people a break from the harm alcohol is causing in their community,” Mrs Morton said.

“We have seen a 70 per cent drop in the number of presentations at the Halls Creek Sobering Up Centre in the first year and presentations continued to decline in the second year.

“This means the DAO and local service providers can consider alternative uses of the centre, and it is now being used as an alcohol and other drug services hub, which is a great example of changing the use of existing resources to benefit the whole community.

“The Halls Creek Alcohol Management Committee has been very proactive in bringing about these changes for the benefit of everyone in Halls Creek. I congratulate them on their efforts.”
