Fitzroy Crossing: Foetal alcohol project gives evidence
Fitzroy Crossing’s Liliwan Project has given evidence to a parliamentary enquiry into foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).
Liliwan project leader Professor Elizabeth Elliot said FASD is more common in Aboriginal and remote areas, and advocates higher alcohol taxes.
She also wants women abusing alcohol to use contraceptives.

A national health umbrella group wants alcoholic women to use contraceptives.
The Rural Health Alliance, which represents many health professional groups, is pushing for the move as part of a strategy to prevent Foetal Alcohol Spetrum Disorder (FASD).

Wyndham: Grog-free homes from Monday
Three old people in Wyndham have had their home(s) declared officially “grog free”.
This is the first use in the town of new powers under the Liquor Control Act which enables people to request the private homes be officially “dry”.
Kununurra, Derby, Broome: Pubs oppose grog sales register
Publicans in Kununurra, Derby and Broome have spoken against a compulsory register of alcohol sales.
Under the scheme, people buying takeaway alcohol would have to submit to a compulsory ID scan.

Bidyadanga: Grog ban sought
Bidyadanga’s CEO Peter Yip says the community is seeking an official alcohol ban.
He said it could take up to 12 months to have the Section 175 liquor restriction declared.
Grog-free Christmas hampers
The ABC says a well-known Christmas hamper will not deliver alcohol to “certain postcodes” in the Kimberley.
Kimberley police have asked the company not to put any liquor in the hampers.
Fitzroy Valley: Study of foetal alcohol kids nears completion
A medical team has been studying Fitzroy Valley children for signs of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
The study was requested by Aboriginal women’s groups at the same time as they asked for the well-publicised alcohol bans.
Reports are due mid-2012.
