Fitzroy Crossing: Foetal alcohol project gives evidence

Fitzroy Crossing’s Liliwan Project has given evidence to a parliamentary enquiry into foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).

Liliwan project leader Professor Elizabeth Elliot said FASD is more common in Aboriginal and remote areas, and advocates higher alcohol taxes.

She also wants women abusing alcohol to use contraceptives.

Magistrate Col Roberts said he had to conduct a court sitting in a carpark and in the rain at Looma community because the promised new facility was not ready.

The ABC says a man accused of deliberately lighting a fire failed to turn up at court on Wednesday.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Kenneth Cherel, 33, who is accused of lighting a fire near Muludja community that burned large areas of Go Go Station.

Fitzroy Valley: Study of foetal alcohol kids nears completion

A medical team has been studying Fitzroy Valley children for signs of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

The study was requested by Aboriginal women’s groups at the same time as they asked for the well-publicised alcohol bans.

Reports are due mid-2012.
