Roebuck Plains: Bushfire advice

A bushfire is burning on both sides of Great Norther Highway about 35km south of Roebuck Plains.

DFESDFES warns drivers to be careful.

Bushfire ADVICE for 35 kilometres south of Roebuck Plains in the Shire of Broome

ALERT LEVEL:

A bushfire ADVICE remains for people travelling in the Roebuck Plains area in the Shire of Broome.

 

• There is no threat to lives or homes but there is a lot of smoke in the area, including across Great Northern Highway.

• Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes.

• The fire is burning on both the western and eastern side of Great Northern Highway, approximately 35 kilometres south of the Roebuck Plains Roadhouse and is burning towards the coast.

BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR:

• The bushfire is moving in a west, south westerly direction.

• It is out of control and unpredictable.

WHAT TO DO:

• Be extremely careful when driving through the area.

• Turn your headlights on and drive slowly.

• Watch for emergency services personnel and follow their directions.

• If you cannot see clearly, pull over, keep your headlights and hazard lights on, and wait until the smoke clears.

• If you have a respiratory condition and you have been affected by smoke you should contact your local doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222.

ROAD CLOSURES:

Avoid the area and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site.

WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING:

Local fire crews and local station owners are monitoring the fire.

 

Local station owners are creating firebreaks and Broome Bushfire Service firefighters are patrolling for spot fires.

EXTRA INFORMATION:

• The incident was reported at 10.29am on Thursday 10 July 2014.

• The cause of the fire is unknown.

• DFES is managing the fire.
