Development of Northern Australia takes another step forward

10 June 2014

Federal Member for Durack Melissa Price has welcomed today’s announcement of Northern Australia Advisory Group members, who will provide expert advice on developing Northern Australia to members of the Strategic Partnership.

Ms Price said the Strategic Partnership includes the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, the Premiers of Queensland and Western Australia and the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory.

“All members of the advisory group have a deep understanding of, and commitment to the development of Northern Australia, and I look forward to reviewing their expert recommendations as a member of the Joint Select Committee on Northern Australia,” Ms Price said.

“Former Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, the Hon Shane Stone AC QC, will chair the Advisory Group; however I am particularly pleased that Western Australia’s interests are strongly represented amongst members.

“Group member Mr Wayne Bergmann has been recognised as one of Australia’s leading advocates for Indigenous self-determination, and has served as Executive Director of the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Cultural Centre Chief Executive Officer of the Kimberley Land Council.

“Well known advocate for the Kimberley pastoral and horticulture industry, Mr Jack Burton, will also advise Government on Northern Australia’s development potential, along with Barradale Farm – horticulture property in the Ord River Irrigated Area – Managing Director Mr David Menzel, and Executive Chairman of the Paspaley Group of Companies, Mr Nicholas Paspaley AC.”

Ms Price said each of these members are strong advocates for Western Australia and are well placed to represent the diverse community, Indigenous and business interests of the state.

“The combined knowledge and experiences of members will help shape the policy directions of the Government’s White Paper in tandem with recommendations made by the Joint Select Committee upon completion of their inquiry process,” Ms Price said.

“The Advisory Group and Committee members will also review recommendations made in the Government’s Green Paper which was released today.”

The Green Paper sets out six policy directions to develop northern Australia further, and invites public comment and debate on these by 8 August 2014. The options include:

• Delivering economic infrastructure;

• Improving land use and access;

• Improving water access and management;

• Promoting trade and investment, and strengthening the business environment;

• Fostering education, research and innovation; and

• Enhancing governance.
