Coroner unable to find cause of death

The coroner has made an open finding into the 1997 disappearance and likely death of a 24-year-old man.

William Maddison French phoned a former girlfriend from Carnarvon in December that year, saying he intended to hitch hike around Australia with a new friend.

The next month his new friend Miro Petrovich Dragovich used his identity at a Kununurra backpackers’ hostel.

Both men’s bank accounts were accessed in Kununurra.

Later that year Dragovich tried to sign on with Centrelink as William French, using Mr French’s Bankwest card.

Mr Dragovich died in 2003.
