New Light Tanker for Hamlet Grove Bush Fire Brigade

The Hamlet Grove Bush Fire Brigade has received a boost ahead of the upcoming Kimberley dry season with the arrival of a new Light Tanker firefighting appliance.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Central Kimberley District Officer Lee Vallance said the new appliance would play an important role in firefighting operations and improve the brigade’s ability to respond to emergencies.

“The new appliance is a V8 Landcruiser and can hold 600 litres of water which is a significant improvement over its predecessors,” Mr Vallance said.

“It will give our firefighters an enhanced resource for what is expected to be a very busy bushfire season.

“We have seen a lot of rain this past wet season and that means there is an increased amount of vegetation that can act as fuel loads for bushfires.”

During the dry season, bushfires can start suddenly, without warning and travel very fast, so people in the Kimberley are being urged to act now to ensure they have all their preparations in place.

“Residents can prepare their property for bushfire by clearing vegetation around their home and removing potential fire traps,” District Officer Vallance said.

“It is also essential that you have a bushfire survival plan which needs to include provisions for livestock and pets if necessary.”

The new equipment was provided by DFES through the Emergency Services Levy.

DFES is working with the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley to prepare for the bushfire season.
