Lake Gregory: Oldest inhabited desert site

Scientists say a 50,000 year old stone core proves Lake Gregory is among Australia’s oldest-known inhabited sites.

An archaeological dig turned up the stone, which had had a few sharp flakes knocked off it to make stone blades.

A scientific technique made it possible to date the quartZ grains surrounding the stone, proving they had not seen sunlight for 50,000 years.
