The Water Corporation has decided not to lower water levels in the Diversion Dam this year.

A media release says lower rainfall predictions meant farmers would not have enough water in storage for the two-weeks needed to do maintenance works.

They will need to organise suitable supplies in time for next year’s scheduled dam maintenance.

Water Corporation call off lake lowering due to dry weather forecast

Water Corporation has called off its plans to lower the level of Lake Kununurra, which was due to take place 11-24 March, due to weather forecast predictions of minimal rainfall.

Water Corporation North West Regional Manager Peter McAllister said the decision was made to call off the lowering as some farmers did not have sufficient onsite water storage or other contingency options in place to be without water for the two week period.

“To ensure growers were not impacted, we have decided to call off lowering the lake this year, however we will continue with plans to clear and repair the Kununurra Diversion Dam levee bank, above the water line,” Mr McAllister said.

“Maintaining the integrity of the levee banks will become increasingly important to protect the town from flooding as the Ord Stage 2 irrigation area comes online. This will require the Kununurra Diversion Dam to operate at its full supply level – 300mm above the current operating level.

“The increasing importance of maintaining a secure levee bank means that lowering the lake level will happen next year and may need to be done annually after that.

“This means irrigators will need to ensure they have suitable contingency supplies in place by this time.”

Mr McAllister is proposing to hold a meeting with irrigators in the coming months to discuss plans for future works.

Residents who would like to be notified prior to any major change in Lake Kununurra’s water level can contact the Water Corporation’s Kununurra office on (08) 9168 0735 to ensure their contact details are registered and correct for the fax stream and email notification process.
