Sydney: New ‘Wanjina’ mural

WanjinaMural06J&SSydney artists have painted a mural depicting a Wanjina.

They are protesting against a planning decision to remove a giant stone, carved with Wanjina images, outside an art gallery in the Blue Mountains east of Sydney.

“This decision appears to give even more power to already power-crazy local bureaucrats,” said a media release from the gallery.

“Eager to indulge Aboriginal people, they were able to enforce censorship by manipulating planning laws, using the heritage listing of the house as an excuse.”

Gallery owner Vesna Tenodi, who has already announced an international competition for art depicting Wanjinas, is now inviting artists to paint Wanjina murals and send photographs to her.

The Blue Mountains city council ordered the stone removed from her property after it had caused considerable distress and protest from local Aborigines and the people of Mowanjum Aboriginal community near Derby.
