Blueprint for Boat Harbour Welcomed 31 August 2010
The Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region, Wendy Duncan MLC has welcomed the release of the blueprint for the Broome boating facility.
Ms Duncan is encouraging Broome residents, who have been actively advocating for a safe boat harbour in Broome, to provide feedback to the Minister for Transport, the Hon Simon O’Brien in the coming months.
“The Broome boating facility is something that the people of Broome have wanted for a very long time and it is good to see some progress on this at last,” Ms Duncan said “The National’s in government have worked closely with the Shire of Broome and the Broome community to provide funding for the much needed infrastructure through the Royalties for Regions program. It is good news that a safe boat harbour, which will provide enhanced boating facilities for locals and tourists, would now be a reality due to this funding.”
Ms Duncan also said that she and Hon Brendon Grylls had undertaken constructive meetings with Yawuru leaders to encourage their active participation in the development of the project.
“The Broome community are best placed to provide comment on the blueprint, as local drive is what brought about initial discussions for a safe boat harbour for Broome.” said Ms Duncan.
“We need to know what the local people want, to make sure that the project meets the needs of the community, fits in well with the local surroundings and is culturally appropriate so that we get good value for the $35 million the government has committed to the project.”
Initially feedback will be provided by a recently formed working group, with community comment to be sought in the coming months.
