James Price Point: Labor governments ‘took land too’ says Carol Martin
by Geoff Vivian

Carol Martin
Local member Carol Martin has difficulty accepting shadow treasurer Ben Wyatt’s criticism of the premier’s gas hub plans.
She said the previous Labor government – of which she and Mr Wyatt were members – compulsorily acquired Broome land for development.
“Compulsory acquision has happened before, in Broome, with the Six Seasons development, under a Labor government,” she said.
Ms Martin was referring to a Landcorp residential subdivision near Cable Beach.
“I am not the Premier, and I must say that he has an obligation to serve the whole state, and he believes this is the right way to go,” she said.
“There always seems to be so much commentary, by those who don’t live here, and who are in a position of privilege.
“They (who) do not have to live in poverty or hardship always seem to have the biggest voice – all those strong opinions and no responsibility.”
She said there is still a chance of a peaceful resolution to the issue that has divided her town.
“I still believe there is a way for the traditional owners and industry to work together – the real issue is ‘who cares’ about our long term future?” she said.
