Peter Holland

Tonight Peter Holland told the story of the legendary Halls Creek surgical operation directed by telegraph from Perth.

He explained how his grandfather, Doctor Joe Holland, then raced from Perth to Halls Creek by boat, car and sulky to attend to his patient.

“This story actually elbowed the war news off the front pages of the newspapers,” said Mr Holland.

He spoke to a powerpoint presentation of the famous story at the Kimberley Society tonight.

At the conclusion of the story he explained how the Rev. John Flynn used it to promote the idea that became the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The Kimberley Society meets in Shenton Park Community Centre, Perth, on the first Wednesday of the month.
