History: Navigating the Fitzroy in 1886
The year is 1886, and the new Kimberley goldfields, now known as Halls Creek, are teeming with diggers.
Dr Lovegrove, the Government Resident at Derby, knows the road will once again be cut at the Fitzroy Crossing, perhaps for months.
He proposes a radical solution: send a riverboat up the Fitzroy, carrying paying passengers and cargo.
This is part of his memo to the Director of Public Works.
