History: Harding, Panter and Goldwyer
In 1865 Governer Hampton sent Maitland Brown to find three explorers who were missing south of Roebuck Bay.
Maitland Brown had the use of a 60 ton vessel for the expedition, and took with him a navigator, two police constables, three black trackers, a justice of the peace and one man described only as a “pleasure seeker”.
The Governor, who had been roundly criticised for refusing the missing explorers a military escort, was also sending five soldiers (known as pensioner guards) to the new sheep station at Roebuck Bay.
This is part one of Maitland Brown’s “Journal of an Expedition” – printed in one of the tiny Swan River Colony’s two newspapers.
