Broome: Roadside death ‘could be murder’

Police are now treating the death of a man on Friday night as a possible murder.

Josh Warneke, found on Broome Highway on Friday night, has head injuries consistent with either an assault or a hit-and-run.

History: Harding, Panter and Goldwyer

In 1865 Governer Hampton sent Maitland Brown to find three explorers who were missing south of Roebuck Bay.

Maitland Brown had the use of a 60 ton vessel for the expedition, and took with him a navigator, two police constables, three black trackers, a justice of the peace and one man described only as a “pleasure seeker”.

The Governor, who had been roundly criticised for refusing the missing explorers a military escort, was also sending five soldiers (known as pensioner guards) to the new sheep station at Roebuck Bay.

This is part one of Maitland Brown’s “Journal of an Expedition” – printed in one of the tiny Swan River Colony’s two newspapers.

Lajamanu: Fish ‘fell from sky’

Lajamanu locals say it rained small white fish on their Tanami Desert community last Thursday and Friday afternoons.

This unusual phenomenon has happened before in the small NT village, in 2004 and 1974.
